Concrete Coatings Chosen For The Slab In Front Of Us
Epoxy is one option among several. Polyaspartic, polyurethane, urethane cement and penetrating sealers all solve different problems, and picking the wrong one is why coatings fail.
Coating Types And When We Use Them
The environment decides the chemistry.
Epoxy
Excellent build and adhesion — the workhorse base for most interior systems.
Polyaspartic
Fast cure, UV stable, great as a topcoat and for tight downtime windows.
Polyurethane
Tough, chemical-resistant topcoat for demanding service environments.
Penetrating Sealer
For exterior slabs where a film-forming coating isn't the right answer.
Exterior Slabs Are Different
Freeze-thaw cycling, UV and moisture from below all change the specification. Outdoor patios and walkways get UV-stable, breathable, textured systems.
Resurfacing Versus Recoating
If the slab surface is heavily spalled, resurfacing rebuilds the profile before any coating goes down.
Concrete Coatings FAQ
- Can you coat over an old failing coating?
- Usually it has to come off. We grind back to sound concrete rather than bond a new system to a failing one.
- Do you do exterior concrete?
- Yes, with systems selected for UV and freeze-thaw exposure.
- How do you check for moisture?
- We test before specifying so a vapor-tolerant primer can be used if needed.
